Dr. Harris has dedicated his life to the care of children with ear, nose, and throat problems. After completing medical school and surgical training, he completed a fellowship at MUSC, dedicated to developing the skills to treat children with complex ear, nose, and throat problems. Fellowship training is what distinguishes Dr. Harris from others in the area – he is the only 100% private and 100% pediatric ENT in the lowcountry. He has made it his life’s work to raise the standard of care in the lowcounty so that no child is denied the expert care he can provide. He has written articles and given lectures over the years, helping inform the next generation of pediatric surgical specialists. He has a passion for problems of the airway, and has studied the role of the HPV virus in the airway. When it comes to surgery on the ear, nose, or throat of children, you can trust Dr. Harris to provide expert care.
Personally, Dr. Harris hails from Chicago originally, though he has family roots in the upstate Spartanburg area. His ancestors were eastern european settlers who came to find a better life at the turn of the last century. The hard-working, family-first, faithful people, who would go on to work the land (and eventually the steel mills around the great lakes area) are the people he is proud to call family. Dr. Harris and his wife Dawn, with ties to Savannah herself, settled in the lowcoutry because of the warm hospitality and desire for a strong, tight-knit community to raise their children. Their 7 children have been raised to enjoy the salty air at the beach, the feel of the pluff mud between their fingers, and the excitement of reeling in a bull red. You can see them around town at the you-pick farms, the boat launches, the beaches, and the historical sites on the peninsula of Charleston downtown.
Color is a powerful way to send a message, and Charleston, with its history as an important commercial hub and port since revolutionary times, is no different. The colors you see before you as you come through the doors at Starfish Pediatric ENT of Charleston were carefully chosen. Here are their stories.
Perhaps you recognize the indigo of our official starfish, copied from the state flag of South Carolina? The original flag, known as the Moultrie Flag, was indigo blue chosen to match the South Carolina militia’s uniforms during the revolutionary war. While there is no “official” color, this indigo is instantly recognizable in the lowcountry, its deep and dark tones evoking historical and substantial emotions. Indigo originates in the lowcounty, and for hundreds of years has been a symbol of our identity as a people of the lowcountry. In much the same way, Starfish Pediatric ENT hopes to serve the children of the lowcounty for many years to come.
The yellow we use to accent the logo and webpage has a link to the port and the water too, and those of you familiar with maritime signal flags will identify the color immediately – a warning of quarantine! The birth of this practice, the discovery of a mission to bring private pediatric ENT to the children of the lowcountry, arose during the days of the quarantine of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Quarantined with his family and away from his patients, Dr. Harris realized that this was a historic event. How long would we wait? Would children ever be able to live as they once had? And Dr. Harris realized that this was a question his own children were asking, and he recognized that many children in his care over the years had asked a similar question – “When will it get better?” At Starfish Pediatric ENT, we know children have an incredible capacity to hope and adapt and succeed, because for a child, there is no other way to be! Success in pediatric ENT is easy to define – we see it every day when the child returns after surgery, bounding up the hallway, smiling a mile wide, and you KNOW you have righted the ship, and helped them heal into their best life.
The aqua we use to accent the starfish invokes imagery of water. The lowcountry is tied to the water, in almost every way, and has been for hundreds of years. Water is both life-giving and cleansing. From baptism on, humans rely on water for life and spiritual health. The starfish lives in the water, and is carried by it. Starfish Pediatric ENT of Charleston will help you and your child navigate the troubling waters of illness. Those times when sickness and discomfort seem too much to bear, we are here for you. Let us help you in your time of need.
